Tiffany Teasley

The great interview redo trick

We’ve all probably wanted an interview redo, that chance to go back and say, “Wait, I can do that!” — and mean it too. That’s what Tiffany Teasley wanted after applying to hundreds of companies and scoring her first interview with data giant LexisNexis. The “teacher turned data scientist” (she proudly wears a T-shirt that says just that) was asked by the hiring manager, Erik if she knew anything about BERT, a data science language algorithm.

“At the time, I didn’t know anything about it,” she said. “So, unfortunately, I had to tell him ‘no’.”

This teacher of twenty years knew she’d have to become a learner again if she wanted to reach her career goals. So she went to Udemy and found Martin Jocquevel and his course, Learn BERT: Most Powerful NLP Algorithm by Google. She spent two weeks not just taking the course but actually applying what she learned to different projects.

Tiffany was excited — so excited that she contacted Erik again and told him about the course and the projects she’d completed. Impressed by her quick learning, Erik advanced her to the next round of the interview process.

“And guess what?” she says with a big smile that cuts a long story short. “I got the job!”

Not only that, but Tiffany unlocked perhaps the greatest trick of all: the interview redo.
