Udemy’s ESG Goals, Policies and Reporting
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Access and inclusion are at the very core of our business, and we have aligned our ESG goals with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as we continue to scale our business:

Quality Education

We provide inclusive and equitable quality training and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Our 46 million learners consumed almost 11 billion minutes of easy-to-access quality learning on our platform during 2020.

Advancing Talent, Global Expertise, and Economic Opportunity

During 2020, our paid instructors earned $161 million for their courses, with average paid instructor earnings of $2,950. Our platform enables individuals from around the world to create new income streams and support their families and local communities.

Catalyzing Diversity and Inclusivity

Our platform dramatically reduces barriers to teaching and learning around the globe. We offer over 18,000 free courses, and our instructors distribute free access to many courses to help anyone learn the skills they need to advance in an ever-changing world. In 2020 alone, 64,271,906 hours of free courses were consumed on our platform.

Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)

Beyond the United Nations SDGs, we reference the Internet Media & Services Sustainability Accounting Standard developed by the SASB in our impact reporting. An independent institution, the SASB provides a globally recognized framework for sustainability reporting across companies and industries.

Sustainalytics

Udemy was a Sustainalytics ESG Industry Top Rated company in 2022. The ESG risk-rating report is available from Sustainalytics as linked above and a summary is available on the Sustainalytics website.

Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings measure a company’s exposure to industry- specific material ESG risks and how well a company is managing those risks. This multi-dimensional way of measuring ESG risk combines the concepts of management and exposure to arrive at an assessment of ESG risk, i.e. a total unmanaged ESG risk score or the ESG Risk Rating, that is comparable across all industries. Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings provide a quantitative measure of unmanaged ESG risk and distinguish between five levels of risk: negligible, low, medium, high and severe. Meet Some of Our Impact Partners

At Udemy, we’re humbled by the opportunity to open access to education — especially for those whose opportunities have historically been limited. To do this, we’ve partnered with a number of organizations.

  • The Last Mile (TLM) provides resources to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people to help them thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. Since our partnership began in 2019, over 189 TLM learners have re-entered the workforce after developing coding and workplace skills on Udemy.

  • AnnieCannons is dedicated to helping survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence become software engineers and entrepreneurs. By partnering with Udemy, AnnieCannons further enables students with no prior development experience to learn data literacy, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more.

  • Upwardly Global aims to eliminate the employment barriers that skilled immigrants and refugees encounter when entering the U.S. workforce. Our partnership gives job seekers access to resources that prepare them to pass industry-recognized certifications, including CompTIA A+, CCNA, and PMP.

  • SV Academy with Gainsight offers an apprenticeship program that helps people break into customer success roles. By partnering with Udemy, over one million underrepresented job-seekers have access to the skills and resources necessary to begin careers in the tech industry.

  • Sentinels of Freedom (SoF) assists severely wounded, post-9/11 veterans in their efforts to become self-sufficient members of their communities as they transition back into civilian life. Our partnership is designed to provide veterans participating in the SoF program with access to the skills and resources they need to re-enter the workforce and complete their transition to civilian life.

Global initiatives

Udemy employees around the world team together to work with various local organizations. Our initiatives range from mentoring middle school students to raising funds for laptops to give to refugee children for their education.
