Udemy raises additional $65 million, led by Stripes Group

We’re announcing some great news today – a $65 million Series D financing round led by Stripes Group, with additional support from Norwest Venture Partners and Insight Venture Partners.

Udemy is growing fast to meet the demands of the economy and the changing nature of work. Today’s jobs require ever-changing skills. Traditional schooling can’t keep up, and most employers don’t invest enough in training. Instead, individuals are taking charge of their own learning and development, and Udemy’s marketplace helps them access the training they need to be successful.

Our investors want to support us in building out our online education marketplace so more people from all walks of life, all around the world, can gain the skills they need to move forward with their career goals. We’ve got big plans that will make Udemy even more valuable for people who want to learn as well as for instructors who want to share their knowledge with the world.

Here are some numbers to give you an idea of how active the Udemy community is today – and why we believe the future looks so bright:

  • 2,000 new courses are created each month in 80+ languages; our catalog currently holds more than 30,000 courses
  • More than 16,000 instructors from around the world have created courses
  • 7 million students are learning on Udemy, representing more than 190 countries; two-thirds of our students are outside the U.S.
  • More than 30% of Udemy students consume courses via iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices

Lead investor Stripes Group is a veteran when it comes to developing online marketplaces, with a portfolio that includes GrubHub, Upwork (formerly Elance-oDesk, Blue Apron, Pond5, and others. We’ve grown our revenue at Udemy about 200 percent over the last 12 months and will use the new capital to continue expanding our content library, enhancing Udemy for Business, and increasing our headcount. Stripes Group Managing Partner Ken Fox will join our board of directors too.

And we couldn’t have accomplished any of this without YOU – our thriving community of passionate students and instructors. You’re the ones who prove out our belief that we all have the potential to achieve our ambitions and that education gives people the power to pursue their dreams. Thanks for joining us on this exciting adventure and helping us make Udemy the best way to learn and teach.
