Further Embedding Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (BEDI) at Udemy

Earlier this year we shared a few of our Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (BEDI) initiatives. These initiatives included our employee resources groups (ERGs), our self identification initiative, Be Represented, and our BEDI Council. We’re excited to share an update on our progress to further embed BEDI and some additional initiatives we’ve launched.

The BEDI Council is a cross-functional advisory board to our executive staff, whose membership includes employees from around the world and across all levels of the organization from executive leadership to individual contributor roles. The Council Members, in collaboration with various teams across the company, identified BEDI objectives and key results (OKRs) for each of our eStaff leaders.

The OKRs include additional racial, ethnic, and gender representation at the board level, an accessibility audit of our technology, multilingual translation of our messaging, and increasing the diversity of our workforce so it is reflective of the communities we serve. Furthermore, our sales leaders will be volunteering their time with organizations who provide career sales training to people from marginalized communities. eStaff will also be partnering with Council Members and their respective teams to implement these OKRs throughout the year.

In regards to the additional BEDI initiatives, we officially launched the ‘Be Series,’ a collection of initiatives that underscore the importance of belonging at Udemy. Our first initiative, Be Represented, is now joined by: Be Celebrated, Be Informed, and Be Respectful – all of which were launched in the first quarter of 2022.

  • Be Celebrated acknowledges the various holidays celebrated by employees around the world. Udemy provides time off for these holidays and we share information about the holiday so people who may not be familiar with the celebration can understand its significance.
  • Be Informed is a weekly posting of BEDI related definitions focused on expanding our vocabulary so it’s more inclusive. Words to date have included: intersectionality, tone policing and feminism.
  • Be Respectful provides our employees with a way to record the pronunciation of their names and post to their profiles so colleagues are aware of how to pronounce them correctly.

Be Well, and Take Care.
