Udemy Takes Pulse of Consumer Interests in Online Learning

Data from Udemy’s 50 million all-time enrollments show online learning trends

Udemy, a global marketplace for learning and teaching online, today released data trends for online learners based on nearly 50 million all-time course enrollments globally.

“People of all ages and in almost every corner of the globe are turning online to learn new skills. The data shows that there is no limit to what you can learn online,” said Grégory Boutté, VP of Content at Udemy. “With more than 40,000 courses available in our marketplace, and hundreds more added each month, the data provides a true representation of current student learning preferences,” he added.

The data illustrates that, overall, learners turn to Udemy most often for developer courses, followed by those on business, design, personal development, and marketing. In the U.S., the top course by enrollment is The Complete Web Developer Course – Build 14 Websites (full list below).

The regional course data also presents a compelling look at how online learning preferences in U.S. cities differ from one another. Sometimes stereotypes ring true through the data: For example, in the city that never sleeps, New Yorkers are 20% more likely to enroll in office productivity courses than the rest of the country. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles and the land of Hollywood, Anti-Aging Strategies Doctors Don’t Talk About is more popular with students in the area, than other cities. The data also paints some more surprising pictures: In Washington, D.C., one of the top courses is the Ultimate Beginner’s Class to Learn Stand Up Comedy.

While there is strong demand for development courses across the country, with Udemy seeing more than 13 million all-time enrollments in these courses, the source of this demand is less predictable. Austin, for example, has a higher percentage of Udemy users enrolled in development courses than San Francisco, long regarded as the capital of technology. Additionally, both Washington, D.C. and Atlanta outpace other cities when it comes to IT & software learning with the category comprising 11% and 10% of total enrollments in each city respectively.

Tastes differ across generations as well. Web development earns the top spot as the most learned topic across Millennials, Gen Xers, and Boomers. However, the fastest-growing topics from 2015 to 2016 differed among generations, with web development (Millennials), data & analytics (Gen X), and finance (Boomers) growing at the fastest rates.
