About This Role: 

As a Director for iOS Engineering on the native apps team, you will oversee the engineering strategy for iOS native apps that will help millions of students achieve greater learning and career outcomes on Udemy, Udemy Business, and Udemy for Government. You’ll be successful by closely collaborating with engineering, products and a set of diverse stakeholders around the world. This role will report to the Head of Mobile Products and Engineering. You will be one of the key engineering leaders driving the native app strategy across various platforms like smartwatches, smart home devices, Amazon Fire TV, Roku TV etc.

You will be responsible for the management of an iOS engineering team of about 9 engineers who will report directly to you. In this role, you will be directly managing this team’s projects and set the direction for the team to align with the company’s vision. You will also be responsible for the learning and development, performance and organizational strategy of this team.

What you'll be doing: 

  • Own evolution of Udemy’s native iOS mobile applications  to support millions of students and instructors on Udemy. Work closely with product and design teams to define the product roadmap and manage major initiatives and milestones.
  • Manage up to 9 iOS engineers as we grow the mobile team in our global offices. Set goals for each team member based on company initiatives and mobile product roadmap. Manage and mentor the mobile engineers to effectively deliver on those goals through effective project management, technical leadership, personal coaching, and collaboration. Put metrics in place to measure quality and quantity of contributions
  • Work in close collaboration with the product management team and mobile architect to brainstorm ideas to implement the product roadmap.
  • Promote healthy debates around solutions and foster an environment of experimentation and bold technological changes in the product.
  • Must be highly ambitious in product delivery by utilizing the latest updates in the app store and iOS engineering world in general.
  • Define mobile engineering best practices including coding standards, build, test and release processes and experimentation. Recruit, hire, and retain a credible team that meets delivery commitments while being responsive to customer support teams.
  • Continue to challenge the status quo in terms of development processes and best engineering practices. Promote healthy debates around new tools and processes and champion changes that have positive impact.
  • Build a team culture that values quality, robustness, and scalability of our systems while fostering initiatives and innovation.
  • Grow and mentor leaders within the engineering organization.
  • Foster fun, friendly, and collaborative team environment for retention and recruiting.
  • Work with internal and external recruiters to attract high quality candidates. Oversee the hiring process to fill open positions while strengthening the team diversity and capacity.
  • Engage and participate in external developer meetups and events to promote Udemy engineering brand as a great place to work. Give tech talks or organize developer panels.
  • Develop strong relationships with other product and engineering departments and evangelize the efforts of the mobile engineering team throughout the company.
  • The iOS mobile engineering team is set to grow in team size and we are looking for someone who can grow with the team and has strong leadership skills.

Experience and knowledge 

  • Built and managed a team of 10+ engineers and has 5+ years of leading and managing engineering teams.
  • 5+ years experience managing teams focused on native mobile application development.
  • 7+ years experience managing and mentoring engineering leaders.
  • Experience building products while collaborating with product management and design, taking them to the market and iterating on them over time.
  • Experience with software engineering best practices including disciplined approach to software testing.
  • Proven track record of driving change and motivating engineers to get behind the change.
  • Ability to work with other engineering teams to collaborate on major initiatives on the platform.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, hands-on, startup environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to build influence with other engineering organizations and be an evangelist of the native apps team within Udemy
  • Open to remote work.
