Director of Data Science, Udemy for Business
 
The Role:
 
Udemy is looking for a Director to lead our Udemy for Business (UFB) Data Science (DS) team. Udemy
for Business is a curated solution of business-relevant and technical courses delivered through a simple platform to provide a business’s employees with the most engaging learning experience. Our UFB DS team focuses on using a combination of both quantitative methods and business intuition to find actionable insights that drive key business decisions throughout the UFB organization.
 
In this role, you will be responsible for growing and leading a global team of decision scientists to partner directly with marketing, sales, customer success, product, and engineering teams throughout the UFB organization. We are looking for a technically sharp, independent data leader with a talent for drawing structure out of ambiguity, a relentless focus on driving meaningful business impact, and a passion for improving lives through learning!
 
Here Are Some Questions You Could Be Working On:
 
How do the needs of our UFB learners differ compared to our consumer marketplace learners?
 
Which marketing levers help drive learner and administrator engagement?
 
How can we most effectively communicate learner engagement and satisfaction to enterprise
customers?
 
What makes a company the right fit for UFB?
 
How can we improve the prioritization of different sales opportunities?
 

Here is what you will be doing:

 - Lead a decision science team with full accountability for business reporting, advanced analytics and modeling across the Udemy for Business portfolio

- Grow, manage and retain an amazing team of high caliber decision scientists. Maintain high-
quality standards for data science work and recruiting
 
- Provide hands-on technical guidance and career mentorship for team members
 
- Partner with cross-functional leaders to shape the team’s and UFB’s roadmaps, and drive
execution
 
- Act as a data translator by effectively promoting the use of analytics and data-driven insights with
non-technical executive leaders and stakeholders
 
- Collaborate with other data leaders to define Udemy’s long-term data strategy, vision, and
internal processes
Serve as a key business/thought partner to the Data team responsible for scaling Udemy’s data
platform and addressing issues related to data governance
 
-Build Udemy’s technical brand through talks, blog posts, and publications


We Are Excited About You Because You Have:

- 5+ years of experience managing and growing high-performance data science teams
 
- 8+ years of industry experience in a decision science context
 
- Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders
 
- Strong business intuition and judgement
 
- Structured thinking and complex problem-solving skills, with ability to zoom in and out to surface
actionable insights
 
- Comfort making informed tradeoffs on analytics prioritization, with an eye towards optimizing ROI
on our investment in data and analytics
 
- Expert data storytelling and data visualization ability
 
- Ability to attract and retain top analytics talent from diverse backgrounds
 
- Strong knowledge of applied statistics, experimental design, and causal inference
 
- Proficiency with SQL and 1+ programming languages (e.g., R or Python), as well as at least one
BI visualization tool (e.g., Tableau, Looker, QlikSense)
